Cut Short

Cut Short

The blazer that stops at the waist

Cropped blazers and short tailored jackets in plaid, tweed, tartan, black and brown, from single button styles to double breasted shapes, plus how to wear a cropped blazer with high waist trousers and jeans.

Why shorter is smarter

A cropped blazer works with high waisted trousers, a long skirt or a pair of jeans because the hem lands where the outfit needs a break.

I sorted this edit into two kinds: checked and plaid styles with some personality, and quieter solids and textures.

Plaid, check and tartan cropped blazers

A brown single button blazer, a grey plaid, a navy check, a green and red tartan and a few tweed style jackets.

What I check: raise both arms. If the hem lifts above the waistband or the shoulders pull, the cut is wrong for you. Leave it if: a pattern that fights with a printed top.

Black, ivory and textured cropped jackets

Black jackets in wool and crepe, a pale tweed, an asymmetric hem and an embellished button style with a sharp shoulder.

My fitting room test: the lining and the fabric weight. A thin lining shows every wrinkle by noon. What I would skip: a crop so short it will not cover the top of the trousers.

How I would wear a cropped blazer

A white tee and high waist wide leg trousers for work. Straight jeans and boots for the weekend.
