Kate Marker Home for fall and winter

Kate Marker founded Kate Marker Interiors in 2007 after earning a degree from Harrington College of Design and freelancing at another firm. She is the studio's principal designer and owner, and her Chicago-area practice makes inviting rooms with natural materials and comfortable layouts. That mix of structure and ease is the part of her work I keep coming back to.

In 2016, Marker bought a Michigan cottage that helped start the vacation-rental side of the business; Kate Marker Home opened online in 2019 as a vintage-rug shop and later grew into a sourcing resource. Her book The Love of Home went on sale September 17, 2024, and frames design through beauty, balance and belonging. I would start in the shop with the Kate Marker x Mitzi lights, then add seating, seasonal details and soft layers.

Start with lighting, then build in texture

Kate Marker x Mitzi is the standout lighting story in this shop. Mitzi describes the collection as approachable elegance, pairing woven wicker, raffia and wood with Patina Brass and Kate Marker Home textiles. The Siena Floor Lamp, Piers Picture Light and Annmarie Pendant show how that material mix moves from floor to wall to ceiling.

Beyond the lights, I would build around one wood or woven piece and keep the room comfortable, not overfilled. The Noah Console uses solid ash and woven paper cord; the Newton Swivel Chair pairs leather and cane; the Tatum Round Ottoman brings a smaller soft landing beside a sofa. These are the pieces I would use to make an open living room feel ready for longer evenings.

Where I would start with Kate Marker's style

Begin with one Kate Marker x Mitzi light, then layer a pillow and rug from the shop. Keep a few seasonal accents on the mantel or table and leave the rest of the room open. The balance of natural texture, warm light and comfortable seating makes the home feel ready for winter without changing its character.
