One and Done

The black jumpsuit that dresses you in one step

Black jumpsuits with long sleeves, tuxedo lapels, velvet and denim, plus sleek evening styles, with tips on fit, length and what to wear on top.

Why a black jumpsuit is worth owning

A black jumpsuit is one piece that looks like a whole outfit. You do not have to think about what goes with what, and it looks just as good with sneakers as it does with heels.

For fall, long sleeves and heavier fabrics like crepe, twill, denim and velvet feel the most right, and they look great under a long coat.

I split the edit into two groups: long sleeve jumpsuits you can wear all day first, then sleek styles for dinners and parties.

Long sleeve black jumpsuits

These are the jumpsuits you will wear the most. The tailored styles with a lapel or double breasted front look like a suit and work for the office, while the tie waist and shawl collar styles feel softer and more relaxed.

For weekends, the black denim and cotton twill utility jumpsuits look great with boots and a leather jacket. The velvet jumpsuit with a sheer sleeve is the one I would wear to a holiday dinner.

My fitting room test: sit down and lift your arms. A good jumpsuit should not pull at the crotch or the shoulders. What I would skip: hems that hit right at the ankle bone, since they look too short with heels.

These dressier jumpsuits have clean necklines and tailored legs, so they look elegant with just a heel and a statement earring. Throw a blazer or a cropped jacket on top when it gets cold.

The high neck and cap sleeve styles feel the most polished, and the crepe jumpsuit with a sheer yoke and bow is the most playful.

What I check: the length with your shoes. The hem should almost touch the floor. What I would skip: thin, clingy fabric that shows every line.

How I would wear a black jumpsuit this fall

For work, add a camel coat and loafers. For dinner, try a cropped leather jacket and a pointed heel. For the weekend, wear the denim or twill style with sneakers and a big scarf.

A belt in brown or gold breaks up all the black and gives you a waist.
