Sheila Bridges' Harlem Toile wallpaper starts with her own point of view

Sheila Bridges created Harlem Toile de Jouy after she could not find a traditional French toile that felt right for her Harlem home. She turned the pastoral form into a print that lampoons stereotypes woven through the African American experience.

Bridges moved to Harlem in 1993 and opened Sheila Bridges Design shortly afterward. Time magazine and CNN named her America's Best Interior Designer, and her projects include the Harlem offices of former President Bill Clinton and the official residence of former Vice President Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff.

From wallcovering to fabric, with a story in every pattern

Harlem Toile began as a wallcovering and grew into fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas and clothing. Bridges' home collection now pairs it with other wallpapers such as Gondolieri, Garden Tools and Torino Damask, so the room can start with a scene or a repeat.

Bridges has also designed spaces at Columbia and Princeton, hosted four seasons of Sheila Bridges: Designer Living, and written Furnishing Forward in 2002 and The Bald Mermaid in 2013. Architectural Digest appointed her to AD100 from 2021 through 2025 and its Hall of Fame in 2026. Her wallpaper is made to order with a four-roll minimum and a 4 to 6 week lead time. The sample cards help check color and quality, but they do not show the full pattern repeat.
