Fashion keeps coming back to the same bags. This revival edit shows the originals behind it: early Dior Saddles, vintage Fendi Baguettes, Gucci horsebit and bamboo bags and early-2000s Louis Vuitton.

The Great Fashion Revival
The original Dior Saddles, Fendi Baguettes, Gucci horsebit bags and Louis Vuitton pieces behind fashion's recurring revivals
Where the Dior Saddle revival started
The Dior Saddle that returned in 2018 began with John Galliano around 2000, and the first versions came in Trotter canvas, Rasta stripes, houndstooth and leather. Looking at those originals shows you exactly what the revival borrowed and what it left behind.
Among the eight in this grid, I would look first at the Christian Dior Green Trotter Canvas Saddle Bag, the Christian Dior Brown Houndstooth Tweed Double Saddle Bag and the Christian Dior Beige Trotter Canvas Rasta Double Saddle Bag.
The Trotter, Rasta and Flight pieces here are worth comparing with the new version. I find the originals more playful. For more on the shapes that keep coming back, see The Icons Worth Revisiting.

The Baguette before it came back
The Fendi Baguette launched in 1997, and it has been revived more than once since. The earlier bags here come in leather, woven raffia, crochet, sequins and beads, in colors and textures you rarely see now.
Among the eight in this grid, I would look first at the Fendi Black Leather Baguette, the Fendi Gold Embossed Leather Baguette and the Fendi Multicolor Beaded Baguette.
I would pick the quirkiest one, because the shape is already so well known. The Baguette family keeps going in The Fendi Archive.

Gucci horsebit, bamboo and Abbey
Gucci's horsebit and bamboo details come from the 1950s and the 1940s, and they keep returning to the collection in new forms. The Abbey and Boston bags here come from the early 2000s and show the GG canvas in its earlier life.
Among the eight in this grid, I would look first at the Gucci Black Original GG Canvas D-Ring Abbey Tote Large, the Gucci Yellow Original GG Canvas Bamboo Bar Tote Large and the Gucci Original GG Supreme Canvas Horsebit Crossbody Mini.
These are the versions that came before the latest reinterpretations, and the proportions are different. To see how the house changed, read The Gucci Years.

Louis Vuitton in the 2000s
Louis Vuitton in the 2000s meant Takashi Murakami's Multicolore, the Conte de Fées patchwork of around 2002 and the Mini Lin of 2007. Revival cycles love those years, and these are the originals rather than new tributes.
Among the eight in this grid, I would look first at the Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton White Monogram, the Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton White Monogram and the Louis Vuitton White Monogram Mini Lin Saumur 30.
The prints are bold and a little unruly, which is the point. For more of the decade, The Y2K Archive has the full picture.

How to spot a revival
A revival is a bag that returns in a similar shape, and the easiest way to spot one is to look at the details. The hardware, the canvas and the strap length usually change first.
Start with the original of the bag you already love, and wear it the way you would wear the new one. Seeing the two side by side is one of the best ways to understand why a design lasts.
